Methodology and data sources
How IbanTool checks banking identifiers, uses reference data and explains its limits.
What a check establishes
IBAN validation checks the available country format, length, structure and MOD-97 checksum. A passing result does not establish that an account exists, is open, can receive a payment or belongs to a particular person. It is not proof of ownership.
Calculation assembles supplied components and IBAN check digits using the stored format. It does not reconstruct missing account details or verify every national checksum. A BIC or routing-code match identifies a directory record, not an account holder.
Coverage and identity
Coverage depends on the country, scheme and source. IbanTool is not a worldwide official certification service. Missing fields or matches can reflect incomplete or older data; a directory match does not guarantee payment acceptance.
A national code is identified by country + scheme + code. The same characters in another country or scheme need not identify the same institution. Preserve leading zeros and distinguish bank, branch and BIC identifiers.
Sources and limitations
Legacy import code references php-iban formats, PeterNotenboom/SwiftCodes, national routing files, OeNB/SIX and community mappings from iban-to-bic, sepa_bic and schwifty. These import references do not establish a current source version or verification date for every retained record.
Versioned German BLZ reference data comes from Deutsche Bundesbank. It includes bank-sort-code, BIC, locality and postcode reference fields. It is not a complete street-address register or a register of every branch. A missing street address must not be inferred from a locality.

Reading source dates
Observation records when the source was obtained; import records when it entered the database; the effective period describes the source validity dates. A page visit or deployment does not refresh legacy records or verify their details.
The recorded source effective period includes today; this does not verify every field or account.
